Reenacting - Far and Away

"The movie Far and Away was filmed in 1991. The final scene of the movie was the 1890 Oklahoma land rush. It was filmed at Pryor Creek, Montana near Billings. This site was selected because the film company could not find a site in Oklahoma without modern manmade structures on the horizon."

"I rode with members of the 7th Illinois Cavalry for this scene. Even though we were a cavalry unit, we rode as civilians. Bob Hench and I were outriders for a wagon driven by another member of the 7th Illinois. Jim Hatzell, Paul Williams, John Morgan and other South Dakotans were also on the set."

"Over 1,000 horses and riders and 250 wagons participated in the land rush scenes. A cannon was fired and then everyone took off and reached a full gallop. At times the dust was so thick it was hard to see where the riders and wagons were at. Filming of this took about two weeks."
